When many people think of cruise vacations, the first image that comes to mind is a family with young kids lounging by by the pool on a Disney cruise. And this is for good reason; cruises have earned a reputation as being the perfect place for families to get away from their busy lives. With all-inclusive itineraries with water slides and arcades, many cruises are built with families in mind.

But what about all of the cruise passengers who aren’t with their families or young children? What sorts of cruise offerings are there for adults looking to have a more age-appropriate vacation experience? If you’ve been asking yourself these questions, then you’ve come to the right place. In this blog, we will be sharing everything you need to know about the wondrous world of adult-only cruises, including three incredible cruise itineraries to consider in 2024.

What Is An Adult-Only Cruise?

Now, you may be wondering what exactly is an adult-only cruise. Besides the obvious minimum age requirement (most adult-only cruises are 18+), adult-only cruises are packed with specific amenities aimed at a more mature audience. While you can still expect the typical features of a cruise vacation (multiple dining options, pools, spas, etc.), adult-only cruises also emphasize nightlife, educational programs, social activities, and adventurous excursions for their passengers.

When looking for the best adult-only cruise for you, it’s important that you take a moment to consider what type of vacation you’re after. Do you want to focus on relaxing by the pool all day, eating snacks from the buffet, and sipping cocktails from the all-inclusive bar? Or maybe you want to spend your vacation learning about and exploring new, unfamiliar places, opting for multiple port excursions and onboard educational seminars. The wonderful thing about cruise vacations is that they offer a large level of customization, meaning you can curate the best cruise itinerary for you.

Another factor to consider when booking your adult-only cruise is whether or not you want to try a themed cruise. Due to their rise in popularity in recent years, themed cruises offer the perfect opportunity for you to combine your vacation with one of your passions.

Have you been a lifelong classic rock fan? Then maybe you’d enjoy a weeklong classic rock cruise where every night a different band plays a concert on deck. Or perhaps you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community and are looking to connect with others in a safe space. There are plenty of adult cruises aimed at bringing different communities together, and this can dramatically enhance your vacation experience.

Furthermore, many adult cruises market themselves as “romance” cruises. These cruise vacations are specifically designed to give you and your partner the romantic getaway of a lifetime, and they can be the perfect way to celebrate a wedding, an anniversary, or a vow renewal. These adult cruises are perfect for couples hoping to spend luxurious, quality time with each other without the distractions of families and children running around the decks.

Choosing which type of adult cruise can be a difficult, if not near-impossible task. But the beauty of these endless possibilities is that there is an adult-only cruise suitable for every type of cruise passenger. The possibilities here are truly endless.

She helped you with your homework and tucked you in at night. Her kindness brought you soup when you were sick and cheered you on from the sidelines at games and practice. She scolded you when you did wrong and praised you when you made her proud. She will always love you unconditionally.

Moms are the best.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and children of all ages are in search of the best way to celebrate such a special day. She loved your macaroni art in grade school, but this year, it might be nice to show Mom how much you really care.

If you haven’t considered taking Mom on a cruise this Mother’s Day, we highly suggest looking into it. Whether it’s a day cruise or a weeklong tropical getaway, Mom will love spending time with her family while enjoying all the activities onboard. Here are some of our favorites!

Spa Day

Cruise Ship SpaEnough with the flowers and cards. Show Mom you really love her with a spa day aboard a cruise liner. Cruise lines take luxury seriously and the spa onboard is usually a prime example. Hot stone therapy, saunas, skin treatments, and full-body massages are just some of the amenities you’ll find at a cruise ship spa. Newer ships take beauty and wellness to a whole new standard, offering treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and hydrotherapy pools. It’s the perfect escape for a busy Mom who needs some much deserved me-time.

Viking Ocean Cruises’ LivNordic Spa utilizes traditional Nordic hot and cold therapies in pursuit of beauty and wellness. Hot water vapor opens pores and cleanses the skin while the snow grotto helps Mom feel her best by improving circulation.

Luxury Dining

Don’t worry about getting a reservation at that exclusive restaurant for Mother’s Day, there’s alwaysMother's Day Cruise a table waiting onboard a cruise ship. Great dining is a staple on the high seas. Modern ships feature numerous food and drink options from the ultra luxurious to fun spots the whole family will love. Skip the cooking and cleaning and enjoy fabulous dishes and flavors from cultures the world over. Sip fine wine or spirits without worry because your stateroom is just a short walk away!

Windstar Cruises recently added sommeliers on many of their ships to aid guests in choosing the perfect wine with every meal.

Adventure Awaits

Shore ExcursionZipline through the jungle or swim with the dolphins, there’s no shortage of activities and shore excursions to choose from when you book a cruise to an exotic locale. Mom will love exploring glaciers in Alaska or hiking volcanoes in Hawaii. Maybe a sunset horseback ride on the beach is more her style? How about a romantic catamaran sail for two? Mom will love all the options offered by major cruise lines.

If she’s a history buff, Carnival Cruise Line offers an unique excursion to the ancient Mayan city of Tulum on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Every shore excursion is something new and different to enjoy!

Disney Dream Emerges with New Enhancements

Cruise News – Nov. 3, 2015

Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream has returned from a three-week drydock with several new enhancements, including:

Star Wars–Inspired Kids Area

Inspired by the Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Millennium Falcon is a newly themed area in Disney’s Oceaneer Club (open to kids ages 3 to 12). At the spacecraft-inspired play area, children join the Rebel Alliance in the epic battle of good versus evil by assisting with navigation, sitting in the cockpit, and piloting the spaceship.

Children can also get creative through Star Wars–themed crafts, games, and activities; watch episodes from the new Disney XD animated series, Star Wars Rebels, on a large screen; or virtually join the rebellion at gaming stations featuring the series’ action-packed adventures. The excitement continues during a shipboard version of the popular Jedi Training experience that invites young Jedi hopefuls to learn light saber moves from a Jedi Master.

High-Tech Disney Infinity Space

Also in the Oceaneer Club, a high-tech interactive space based on the Disney Infinity video game offers children a new way of playing with exciting virtual experiences and immersive activities. Customized, on-screen adventures bring Disney stories to life.

The complete set of Disney Infinity character figures is on display, and kids visiting this room (found only aboard Disney Dream) can also unlock exclusive Disney Cruise Line content that they can continue to enjoy when playing Disney Infinity at home.

Special activities bring the virtual gameplay experience to life. For example, a life-sized Disney Infinity Base sets the stage where children take the place of character figures for a group gaming experience. Lighting up in response to gameplay on a large screen, this interactive floor allows kids to be immersed in the Toy Box.

Specialty Sweet Shop
On the Disney Dream, Vanellope's Sweets and Treats satisfies the sweet tooth of cruisers of all ages, with handmade gelato and ice cream, an assortment of candy, and delectable novelty treats for purchase. Inspired by the whimsical candy land of the Sugar Rush race car game in “Wreck-It Ralph,” the sweet shop offers new flavors of gelato and ice cream daily, along with a wide selection of toppings. (Kent Phillips, photographer) Vanellope’s Sweets and Treats serves up handmade gelato and ice cream, an assortment of candy, and novelty treats for purchase. New to Deck 11, the smell of freshly baked waffle cones and candy lingers from the specialty store’s two entrances, inside Cabanas restaurant, and outside by the pool deck.

Resembling the whimsical candy land of the Sugar Rush racecar game in Wreck-It Ralph, the sweet shop’s décor features nods to the film, including a racetrack, gas pump-style gumball dispensers, Vanellope’s racecar, and King Candy’s throne. New flavors of gelato and ice cream are offered daily, along with a wide selection of toppings. Signature sundaes include Vanellope Von Schweetz’s Race Kart Sundae, served in Vanellope’s own racecar, and Ralph’s Family Challenge Sundae, presented in a trophy cup and made with eight heaping scoops of ice cream, meant for the entire family to share.

Magical Makeover Salon

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on Deck 5 midship brings to life the storybook fantasies of young guests. This special salon offers aspiring princesses and knights ages 3 to 12 the chance to transform into royalty with the help of a fairy godmother-in-training. On pirate party night, the boutique becomes The Pirates League where swashbuckling pirates of all ages will have the opportunity to unleash their inner buccaneer.

Adults-Only Retreat

Exclusively for adults, Deck 13 forward includes a new water feature, Satellite Falls, a circular splash pool with benches and a gently falling rain curtain that provides cool comfort. Around this upper deck, adult guests can soak up the sun in loungers or relax in the shade under a canopy.

Disney Dream debuted in 2011 and sails 3- and 4-night Bahamas cruises from Port Canaveral.

Porthole‘s Five Faves

Rock This Ship

Five Reasons You’ll Love a Music Theme Cruise

I recently had the pure joy of spending four days on a cruise with six of my favorite people: Emily, Donnie, Danny, Jordan, Jon, and Joe. The former, my BFF since kindergarten; the latter five, none other than our all-time favorite band of (cough) 20 years — New Kids on the Block, now NKOTB.

You can read the full account of the cruise in an upcoming issue of Porthole Cruise Magazine, but for now, all I have to say is that if you ever get the chance to cruise with your favorite musician or band — don’t think twice. Here are just five reasons why a music-theme cruise will rock your world.

Instant Camaraderie

Whether at the buffet, waiting for an elevator, or in line for a selfie, it doesn’t take long to strike up a conversation with fellow band lovers (in this case, “Blockheads”). You’re literally surrounded by like-minded people who can talk just as long as you can about that amazing concert in ’90, who your favorite band member is and why, or all the funny, nice, and ridiculous things you’ve read on the cruise’s dedicated Facebook page. Deck corridors felt like dorm hallways as fans spent the first few hours on board decorating their doors with posters, photos, and signs and then wandering around to check out some of the amazing masterpieces.

Intimate Venues

NKOTB On Stage photoThe first time Emily and I saw New Kids in concert was at the Meadowlands, a stadium venue with more than 80,000 seats where we danced all night as five little specks on stage sang for the roaring crowd. This time, we were two of approximately 1,500 in Carnival Victory’s Caribbean Lounge. We joked that we were in the nosebleed section, but truth be told: There wasn’t a bad seat in the house to watch our boys sing their classic songs, new hits, and a few that were voted for ahead of time by cruisers via email survey. Even better, each night brought a Lido Deck party that went well into the night and offered the most amazing opportunities to get even closer to the guys as they made their way around, sometimes crowd surfing their way from stage to stage.

Behind the Scenes

Travel with anyone for four days straight and you’ll learn a lot about them by watching them interact. NKOTB selfie Emily photoIt’s these types of exchanges that made me realize that a group of world-famous singers is just like any other group of close, 40-something guy friends. Pay attention and you’ll get to hear banter, stories, and secrets that become exclusive to you. Some of the most memorable moments come from spontaneous, unscripted, unplanned scenarios.

For example, one day Donnie decided he wanted to try to break the world record for most selfies in three minutes, which is currently held by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who took 105 selfies at the premiere of San Andreas. Fans had no problem lining up on deck to help him achieve this goal, and first counts showed Donnie coming in at around 140. (Counts are currently being finalized and submitted to Guinness World Records.) In fact, speaking of selfies — Ask any cruiser about their favorite moment on the cruise, and the majority will say it was taking a selfie with their favorite New Kid. (Myself included.)

Chance Encounters

As in life, on a music cruise you just never know when you’ll be in the right place at the right time. We decided early on not to fight the crowds, but instead to just go with the flow in hopes of chance encounters — and the strategy worked. You see, band members are not just onboard celebrities; they are cruise passengers, too, which is why I happened to run into Donnie at guest services, Emily got pulled on stage to dance with her fave, Joe, and a few women relaxing in the ocean in Grand Turk suddenly found Jon swimming right beside them. Certainly moments that weren’t on the daily agenda!

Maybe I’m biased, but with any given vacation, I will always vote for a cruise. The logistics are easy, schedules are planned for you, there’s no need to break down a dinner bill among friends, and, best of all during this type of at-sea party, there’s no need to assign a designated driver. The benefits of a cruise make a long list; combine these perks with cruising with your favorite band and you have the recipe for a perfect vacation.

Flower Power

Peace out with Mellow Yellow’s psychedelic onboard shows.

By Josie Gulliksen

Even though I was a first-timer on a theme cruise, I had a pretty good idea what to expect from a band called Mellow Yellow. I figured there’d be plenty of fans of the trippy 1960s music they play, and so my sister, Susy, who was traveling with me, picked up a couple of flowery headbands and psychedelic-style bracelets that we could wear to the concerts and theme night parties. Upon boarding MSC Cruises’ MSC Divina we headed to our cabin, settled in, and quickly glanced at the schedule for our upcoming sailing adventure.

Stage Shows

We would first encounter Mellow Yellow, a ’60s and ’70s tribute band, on Friday night, the third night of the cruise, at their trippy show that took over the Pantheon Theatre. According to the band’s website, “While other tribute bands just play the music, Mellow Yellow goes the extra mile to capture all the hey-man-peace-and-love-grooviness of the songs that helped define a decade.” So we donned our flower child headbands and bracelets and settled in to get a good view of the group.

It was obvious from just the first few songs that the quintet is a tight band comfortable around each other. Singer Linda Bassick (whose stage name is “Dusty Love”) was rocking her ’60s-inspired outfit as well as several instruments. She showed her range on vocals moving smoothly from Jefferson Airplane’s psychedelic “White Rabbit” to the kitschy “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra. Her flute-playing skills are first rate as well.

Running through hits from The Beatles, The Moody Blues, and, of course, the signature Donovan hit “Mellow Yellow” were David Cooper (or Brad DaddyO) who performed his share of vocals and played the Mellowyellowtron; Ken French (or Kenny Diggit) on guitars, keyboards, and vocals who was the highlight on Doors songs; bassist Brad Sourdiffe (or Apollonius “Flip” Funk); and Sean Preece (stage name Saratoga Sunshine) on drums.

Parties and Panels

Following the concert, we headed to the disco for the ’70s theme party where the DJ played Gloria Gaynor’s disco anthem “I Will Survive” but also delved into….
