As remote work has become a reality for more and more people, a new trend has taken the travel industry by storm: alternative living. With the newfound flexibility offered by working remotely, many people are curating a full-time travel lifestyle, hopping from timezone to timezone while working their full-time jobs online. And the cruise industry is no exception.

As more and more people are able to work remotely, the desire to live on a cruise has become increasingly popular. And with this desire comes the inevitable question of affordability. Just how expensive is it to live on a cruise ship full-time, year-round? In this blog, we’re going to break down an approximate budget for this enviable new lifestyle.

Cruise Accommodations

By far the most expensive aspect of living on a cruise ship year-round is the accommodations. However, the good news is that aspiring full-time cruisers have a variety of options to choose from, all suitable for different types of travelers with diverse budgets.

Some travelers opt to lease apartments on residential cruises such as Residence At Sea’s The World and Villa Vie Residences. This is by far the most expensive option, as many of these residential cruise apartments have six-figure price tags. However, for those willing and able to rent long-term accommodations, this option comes with a host of luxurious benefits, all the while taking you to hundreds of ports around the globe.

A more affordable option is what’s referred to as a World Cruise. Much like the residential cruise lines mentioned above, these cruises sail all around the world, with voyages such as the World Cruise from Life At Sea guaranteeing a visit to all seven continents. These itineraries typically span three to six months, and many full-time travelers choose to book these longer voyages back to back.

Life At Sea’s world cruise, however, was specifically designed with full-time cruisers in mind, offering a three-year cruising option. Benefits of this three-year itinerary include all-inclusive dining, laundry service, and diverse entertainment options. The price? For their November 2024 itinerary, prices start at around $80,000 per year, per person, though in previous years prices have been several thousand dollars cheaper.

For those with a tighter budget hoping to live on a cruise ship, there are still plenty of great alternatives. Some travelers prefer to book traditional, short-term cruises back-to-back, giving them greater control of the itinerary. Prices for these vary from itinerary to itinerary, but an average cabin price of $100/night for an entire year comes out to over $36,000. Talk about a discount. The catch here is that you will be in a near-constant state of booking short cruises, injecting a level of uncertainty into your living situation.

One last thing to note is that many of these long-term cruise options charge passenger fees on top of accommodation fees. If you choose to lease an apartment on a residential cruise, for example, in addition to the price of rent, you will also be expected to pay an annual cruise fare. The prices for these fares vary significantly from cruise line to cruise line, so be sure to do thorough research before deciding which option is the most economical for you.

Food on a Cruise

Another financial factor to consider when deciding to live on a cruise year-round is food. While many cruise lines offer all-inclusive options to their guests, this isn’t always the case. Furthermore, living full-time on a cruise gives you the opportunity to try local foods from around the world. So ask yourself: how much money are you willing (or able) to spend on food while traveling the world?

This is not the easiest question to answer, particularly as every person has different priorities, preferences, and restrictions when it comes to food. If you follow a strict diet at home, it will likely be harder and more expensive to stick to it abroad. Furthermore, while prices in the restaurants, buffets, and grocery stores on your ship will remain stable throughout your journey, food prices in ports can vary tremendously from country to country, from continent to continent.

Another factor to consider is tipping. Tipping culture varies from region to region, so if you plan on visiting restaurants or bars in port, be sure to research how much money (if any) you’ll have to spend on gratuities.

Creating a food budget while living on a cruise full-time can be a challenge. But rest assured that this is one of the aspects of year-round cruise living over which you have a lot of control. By sticking to all-inclusive dining options aboard your ship, you can save a substantial amount of money.

The Unexpected Expenses (Taxes, Insurance, Healthcare)

While living on a cruise guarantees an exciting and adventurous lifestyle, it also comes with certain logistical complications that you may not have considered. For example, in addition to the accommodation fees and cruise fares, you should also expect to pay a considerable amount of taxes while living aboard, with one notable example being the port fee. All passengers must pay this tax when they choose to disembark at any given port, and while living on a cruise full-time, these fees can quickly add up.

Secondly, you will likely have to purchase new insurance policies that cover your medical expenses abroad. Relying on your typical travel insurance plans will not be suitable as these policies are meant for shorter-term trips. Thus, it’s worth contacting your current insurance provider and discussing your options for year-round coverage.

In a similar vein, it’s important to think ahead about health care. While there is a doctor on board open to passengers, their time and resources are limited. If you have any preexisting conditions that require frequent visits to a health care provider, living on a cruise full-time can prove to be a challenge. Thus, it’s best to have a few plans in place as to how you would handle any medical emergencies abroad.

Lastly, you will likely have to purchase a new phone plan to ensure that you don’t lose access to your data while traveling the world. For more information on using your phone and other devices on a cruise ship, be sure to read this article in which we break down everything you need to know. When in doubt, however, contact your at-home provider and research whether they have any international phone plans that will meet your needs.

Living on a Cruise Full-Time Is Possible

As you can see, there are a nearly endless number of factors that contribute to the affordability of full-time cruise ship living. Doing your research and making the most informed decisions for yourself will ensure that this lifestyle is financially feasible for you. In the end, you can expect to pay anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 to live on a cruise ship full-time, though added amenities can quickly drive this price up.

It’s important to note that this number is approximate, and the actual cost of living on a cruise ship full-time will vary from person to person. But at the end of the day, this alternative lifestyle of travel can be feasible for people with diverse budgets. Armed with the right tools and information, you can curate the year-round cruise experience that is perfect for you and your needs. That feeling of flexibility is just a taste of the freedom you can expect from cruise living.

When many people think of cruise vacations, the first image that comes to mind is a family with young kids lounging by by the pool on a Disney cruise. And this is for good reason; cruises have earned a reputation as being the perfect place for families to get away from their busy lives. With all-inclusive itineraries with water slides and arcades, many cruises are built with families in mind.

But what about all of the cruise passengers who aren’t with their families or young children? What sorts of cruise offerings are there for adults looking to have a more age-appropriate vacation experience? If you’ve been asking yourself these questions, then you’ve come to the right place. In this blog, we will be sharing everything you need to know about the wondrous world of adult-only cruises, including three incredible cruise itineraries to consider in 2024.

What Is An Adult-Only Cruise?

Now, you may be wondering what exactly is an adult-only cruise. Besides the obvious minimum age requirement (most adult-only cruises are 18+), adult-only cruises are packed with specific amenities aimed at a more mature audience. While you can still expect the typical features of a cruise vacation (multiple dining options, pools, spas, etc.), adult-only cruises also emphasize nightlife, educational programs, social activities, and adventurous excursions for their passengers.

When looking for the best adult-only cruise for you, it’s important that you take a moment to consider what type of vacation you’re after. Do you want to focus on relaxing by the pool all day, eating snacks from the buffet, and sipping cocktails from the all-inclusive bar? Or maybe you want to spend your vacation learning about and exploring new, unfamiliar places, opting for multiple port excursions and onboard educational seminars. The wonderful thing about cruise vacations is that they offer a large level of customization, meaning you can curate the best cruise itinerary for you.

Another factor to consider when booking your adult-only cruise is whether or not you want to try a themed cruise. Due to their rise in popularity in recent years, themed cruises offer the perfect opportunity for you to combine your vacation with one of your passions.

Have you been a lifelong classic rock fan? Then maybe you’d enjoy a weeklong classic rock cruise where every night a different band plays a concert on deck. Or perhaps you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community and are looking to connect with others in a safe space. There are plenty of adult cruises aimed at bringing different communities together, and this can dramatically enhance your vacation experience.

Furthermore, many adult cruises market themselves as “romance” cruises. These cruise vacations are specifically designed to give you and your partner the romantic getaway of a lifetime, and they can be the perfect way to celebrate a wedding, an anniversary, or a vow renewal. These adult cruises are perfect for couples hoping to spend luxurious, quality time with each other without the distractions of families and children running around the decks.

Choosing which type of adult cruise can be a difficult, if not near-impossible task. But the beauty of these endless possibilities is that there is an adult-only cruise suitable for every type of cruise passenger. The possibilities here are truly endless.

Every port city has Its day in the sun and none shine brighter than Piraeus, Greece. No seafaring sailor is worthy of the title without a call on this ancient port sometime in his career. Of course Athens gets its fair share of the Aegean spotlight, but without Piraeus it would be landlocked for cruise guests.

It would be unthinkable to visit Athens without viewing the wonders of Greece, the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the alleys of Plaka. But for guests that have been to the Greek capital before, why not expand those inquisitive horizons and explore Piraeus with its treasure trove of history, basking in a world of its own.

Start with a visit to the Archaeological Museum featuring ruins of the ancient theater and bronze statues recovered from the sea as recently as 1959. The ruins of the Hellenistic Theater of Zea, built in the 2nd century are adjacent to the museum.

Entering the The Bay of Zea through the remains of the ancient walls is well worth a stroll reliving the city’s endemic maritime history. The view of modern Piraeus and the marina loaded with luxurious yachts paints a colorful contrasting landscape.

The oval shaped harbor of Mikrolimano was at one time Athen’s main naval port. Today it is a sought after destination renowned for its upscale seafood restaurants although the daily catch of seafood at more reasonable rates can be found almost anywhere in the city

Destroyed by bombing in 1944, the Church of the Holy Trinity has been rebuilt and serves as a focal point of the city. Although the city maintains its own colorful appeal, it’s the access to the islands of the Aegean that contributes to its popularity.  Dozens of ferries depart from the Port of Piraeus on scheduled trips to over 20 different islands of the Greek archipelago. Make it a day trip or stay overnight or longer on these havens of paradise.

The city’s character is one thing but it’s the convenience for cruise passengers that contributes to its popularity. You’ll find hotel rates far less than those in the metro area of Athens and the slower pace of life is a calmer alternative for a pre or post cruise stay.

Piraeus Hotel
Photo: The Alex Hotel

Inspired by the street scenes of the Kastella neighborhood, The Alex Hotel is perched on the hillside overlooking a colorful marina. Secluded from the bustle of the city yet only steps away from the sea and the coast’s restaurants and bars, this charming boutique style hotel with contemporary decor makes for a perfect short stay destination. The  well designed cruise pier hosts dozens of cruise ships each week and is just a short taxi ride away,

If you prefer to relax in preparation for your upcoming cruise, the property’s rooftop restaurant, Nest is perfect for soaking up the city’s seaside vibe in a sophisticated and trendy ambiance. Featuring delicious seafood, typical Greek dishes and vintage wines of the country.

Piraeus is an ideal gateway for your next Aegean cruise adventure, whether it be by cruise ship or ferry to the island treasures of the Greek archipelago.

So you’re considering an Antarctic expedition.

You’re not alone — the fastest-growing segment of the cruise business is expedition cruising, and a wild array of lines, from Atlas Ocean Voyages to Silversea, Princess to Ponant, Hurtigruten to Swan Hellenic, all have cruises to Antarctica in 2023. Porthole was recently fortunate enough to sail aboard Quark Expeditions’ Ultramarine (expect more on this new ship in Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine) and came away with some insights for getting the best out of an Antarctica Cruise.

  1. Lectures. Attend them. Ultramarine was a fantastic ship, but the greatest asset on board was the expertise offered by more than 30 expedition guides. They included historians, marine biologists, ornithologists, military pilots, safari guides, and researchers who’d spent years above the Arctic Circle in Svalbard or at facilities in Antarctica like McMurdo Base.  They are, in the best possible way, geeks. They love polar regions, they know an awful lot about them, and they’re super eager to share their enthusiasm. This isn’t like school. It’s like a sneak preview of what you’ll be seeing on your landings. You’ll come away a big fan of krill, light-mantled sooty albatrosses, and Commandant Jean-Baptiste Charcot (who brought Champagne and a croissant baker on his Antarctic expedition). If you can’t catch the lectures in person, they should also be available via simulcast in your cabin.

2. Mid-layers. Don’t overdo them.

This may be Antarctic travel heresy, but most of the time when visits take place, it’s Antarctic summer. You can tell the folks back home you were braving sub-zero winds to rub noses with the penguins, but the temperatures are really more like Boston in November. Once you’re on the ship, the best tip is to walk both sides of the outer decks (it’s Deck Five on Ultramarine) before breakfast and adjust your wardrobe accordingly.
When packing, avoid cotton. It holds water, and you’ll be on boats and in snow. You’ll want a base layer (merino wool, silk, or polyester thermals, a couple of pairs of wool socks), and maybe two mid-layers (a long-sleeved shirt, wool pants or synthetic leggings, a wool sweater or non-cotton fleece). Your cruise line will probably provide your outer layer: loaned snow boots and a parka to keep in a distinctive shade of yellow. (On our flights home, the Quark guests were resplendent in a bright canary while the Seabourn folks in the same passport lines wore a deeper goldenrod.)

That and a hat, gloves, and scarf are really about it. You can get any other warmth you need from a pack of chemical handwarmers kept in pockets or boots. They’ll also keep your phone battery alive a little longer in the cold.

Photo: Porthole Cruise & Travel

3. Bathroom floors. They’re heated. If you’re the kind of cruiser who’s not above doing a little laundry in the bathroom sink, heated floors are the perfect clothes drier. But they’re also ideal for doing what they’re designed for: returning sensation to your frozen fingers and toes after a few hours walking with the penguins on shore or spotting fin whales on deck.
Basically, thanks to this simple bit of technology, every cabin comes with its own private sauna. Just bear in mind that it takes more than an hour for them to reach full temperature, so turn them on before you head out and they’ll be toasty on your return (plus your freshly washed T-shirts will be ready to change into).

4. Learn the lingo.

    • Sporty is expedition leader-ese for “F@ rough!” as used in the phrase, “Well, the winds are gusting over 45 knots so it’s looking a little sporty out there.”
    • Fresh is expedition leader-ese for “F@ cold!” as used in the sentence, “That low pressure we saw on yesterday’s charts brought the mercury below 0-degrees C this afternoon, so it’ll be a bit fresh at Danco Island tomorrow morning.”
    • Whipping describes the wind and/or waves once the captain has closed outer decks until conditions improve; in other words, the weather that you are not expected to partake in. Example sentence: “It’s started whipping out there, so I’m afraid those doors should remain closed until Captain says otherwise.”

5. High seas. Expect them. (But don’t freak out.)  Unless you’re on one of the few passenger ships departing from New Zealand, you’re going to be spending time in the notorious Drake Passage, where 8-meter seas are not uncommon. That means waves of more than 25 feet.

Some of your fellow travelers will rely on prescription scopolamine patches. Others of us go with the flow. Keep watching the horizon. Don’t let yourself get hungry. Take a green apple from the breakfast buffet and keep it in your cabin just in case. Take a Bonine as soon as your palms start sweating (except with the aforementioned handwarmers). Order a ginger beer. If the bartender adds rum and a lime, that’s a dark and stormy. The rum will not help, but the ginger will.

Don’t lock eyes with that polar-bear photo in the forward stairwells. That beast does not have your best interests at heart. Look out the window. Sip tea in the observation lounge, if you can.

This is the windiest region on Earth, but what blows in will also blow out. Tranquility is waiting there, just over the horizon. Keep staring out there and you’ll find it. .

Photo: Porthole Cruise & Travel

6. Bring your phone as well as a camera. The best photos will happen off the ship, but they might not take place on land. If you’re on a Zodiac zipping between icebergs and a family of humpbacks starts surfacing nearby, you’ll want to snap a photo quickly. You’ll want to keep your nice camera and fancy telephoto lens in a waterproof bag — but an iPhone in a Ziploc bag is just as waterproof and can be in your hand in a second.

And if you’re lucky enough to snap a sounding whale’s splashing tail, you can use that same phone to load the photo up to HappyWhale.com. The site should be able to identify that individual whale from its tail, and can send you emails as it’s tracked during its global migrations.

Another advantage of keeping a phone handy is to be able to record videos with sound. Until you’ve stood in the middle of a colony of 150,000 king penguins, waddling carefully around the fleshy mountains of half-snoozing fur seals, you can’t really appreciate the sounds of an Antarctic voyage.

As much as photos, that cacophony is something worth remembering from a bucket-list trip.

Today, Brightline and its partners in Boca Raton, Aventura, and Miami-Dade County celebrated the grand opening of two new train stations in Aventura and Boca Raton. Congressman Carlos Gimenez and Mayors Daniella Levine Cava, Scott Singer, and Howard Weinburg attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, along with city officials from Boca Raton, Aventura, Miami-Dade County, and Brightline executives. Wednesday, December 21, is the first full day of service for the two new stations.

The celebration was located at the entrance of the Boca Raton station, where guests were welcomed by Brightline’s President Patrick Goddard, City of Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer, Florida State Senator Tina Polsky, and Milton Segarra of Discover The Palm Beaches. After the ceremony, guests were given tours of the brand-new station and a seat on the inaugural ride from Boca Raton to Aventura.

The ceremony at Aventura began at 12 PM with remarks from Brightline President Patrick Goddard, Congressman Carlos Gimenez, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, City of Aventura Mayor Howard Weinburg, former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman and Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (CITT) Second Vice Chair Robert Wolfarth. Following the ceremony, attendees were given a tour of Aventura station and a spot on the inaugural ride from Aventura to MiamiCentral.

In addition to the new Boca Raton and Aventura stations, Brightline has five stations in South Florida. The new stations will offer travelers easy access to popular existing locations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. The Boca Raton and Aventura stations feature Brightline’s famous MRKT, SMART, and PREMIUM lounges, touchless turnstiles, and free high-speed Wi-Fi.

Brightline Aventura Station

Brightline’s new Aventura Station is located at 19796 West Dixie Highway, Miami, FL 33180. The station promises travelers a quick and efficient way to get around the sunshine state. Brightline approximates an estimated 20-minute travel time from Aventura to MiamiCentral. The station will also offer express services between Miami during the busy morning and evening hours to ease stress for daily commuters.

Per an agreement between Miami-Dade Transit and Brightline, guests can purchase discounted tickets between Aventura and MiamiCentral through the Brightline website and app. Monthly passes can also be purchased for a discount at the guest services desk at the Aventura station. Beginning in January 2023, discounted commuter passes will be available online or through the app.

The new station is a whopping 34,000 square feet and features 240 parking spaces, a bus drop-off for Miami-Dade Transit passengers, and a pedestrian sky bridge that takes guests from the transportation towers to the train platform. Brightline is designing a new pedestrian bridge connecting the train platform to the Aventura Mall. Before the new pedestrian bridge, Brightline will provide guests with a free bi-directional Brightline+ shuttle to the Aventura Mall. The shuttle will be available for 14 hours a day.

The Aventura station was constructed in conjunction with LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Silver criteria, maintaining Brightline’s promise to reduce its contribution to global climate change and protect water resources. The station features a solar canopy and electric charging vehicles to reduce emissions and motivate passengers to utilize clean transportation. The LEED Silver station also includes materials that create healthy indoor spaces and modern technology to reduce water use.

Brightline Boca Raton Station

Brightline’s Boca Raton station is located next to the downtown library and across from Mizner Park at 101 NW 4th St, Boca Raton, FL 33432. The new station is 22,000 square feet and features a parking garage with over 450 vehicles for Brightline passengers and library visitors. The station also features two complimentary Brightline+ EV carts to downtown destinations in Boca Raton. Travel time between Boca Raton and MiamiCentral is approximately one hour.

For any “road cruiser,” whether in a car, a tricked-out Sprinter van, or a fully loaded Winnebago Adventurer, the big dream is a coast-to-coast trip. But before you jump into a bucket-list journey that can take many months (and hopefully hundreds of side-trips) to complete, consider a practice run — a miniature coast-to-coast drive through some of North America’s most beautiful landscapes. We’re talking about spending a few days crossing Vancouver Island from the Salish Sea west to the wild Pacific Coast.

Victoria: The Butchart Gardens

We’ll start in the city where cruise ships dock. Victoria might seem at first like a little sister to (or ferry-boat expansion of) the metropolis of Vancouver. It’s actually the provincial capital of British Columbia, and is packed with sophisticated charm.

The Butchart Gardens is a uniquely civilized introduction to Vancouver Island’s natural beauty, with 55 acres of carefully shaped landscapes tended by 50 full-time gardeners. The attractions include an Italian Garden, a Japanese Garden, a Rose Garden, all crafted around Jennie Butchart’s original Sunken Garden — a former limestone quarry she decided to make beautiful in 1912.

Nanaimo: Trails and Tastes

From Victoria, we head north via the Brentwood Bay ferry (the oldest ferry link on the coast of British Columbia) to Nanaimo, a place of towering trees and taco trucks, but famous across Canada as the birthplace of the “Nanaimo bar.” This no-bake dessert features layers of custard and chocolate ganache over a crust of shredded coconut, nuts, and graham cracker. In a region famous for its trails, the least strenuous has to be the Nainamo Bar Trail, leading visitors to bakers serving the treat’s most creative interpretations.

Qualicum Beach & Courtenay: Elevated Vacation or Elven Fantasy

Continuing along 19A to Qualicum, we come to a choice of two fantastic glamping getaways. Turn left, and you’re at Free Spirit Spheres, a dream-like rainforest resort consisting of cozy, globe-shaped treehouses suspended by cables in the middle of the coastal rainforest.

Or continue half an hour up the coast to Courtenay and the Rainforest Yurt: An Elven Fantasy. This gorgeous woodland lodging is to a tent what the Ritz-Carlton is to a Motel 6. The interior boasts a curving staircase leading up to a sleeping loft, while the valley outside is filled with stately trees and paths leading down to the beach.

Coombs: The Old Country Market

Turn back south for a stop at The Old Country Market. What started as a simple produce stand gradually evolved. Today, it’s a traditional Scandinavian sod-roof building with a happy family of goats munching on the grass overhead, and people munching down below at the taqueria, the cafe, the pizzeria, the bakery, the doughnut shop, the ice cream parlor … or shopping for European deli goods and ….

Resting along the shoreline of Spain’s Balearic Sea, Barcelona is a city with plenty of modern amenity to go along with it’s very old-world charm. A bustling cruise port, many cruising the Mediterranean choose to extend their stay before or after their Barcelona cruise vacation to really dive deep into all the city has in store for curious visitors.

Embarkation day can be a lot sometimes so a hotel like the InterContinental Barcelona adds convenience to your vacation with its location nearby to the cruise port and much of the best sights and experiences in Barcelona.

Finding a Pre or Post-Cruise Barcelona Hotel

The actual ‘travel’ aspect of traveling isn’t always a breeze so cruisers get smart when they book their pre or post-cruise hotel to help make embarkation or disembarkation day even easier. For a Barcelona cruise, booking nearby to the port is the best way to do that.

A busy port with several ships in and out every day, Barcelona’s cruise terminal is located downtown near the famous La Rambla tourist boulevard and just a quick cab or Uber ride away from InterContinental Barcelona. The hotel is just outside of the city’s Gothic Quarter in Montjuic, which means quieter nights and a more laid-back atmosphere than the more heavily-visited sections of the city.

The exotic allure of Istanbul is undeniable. The mix of culture and history, blended with diverse food influences is a recipe for a unique experience unlike any other. On a recent cruise visit we participated in a culinary tour with the foodie experts at Culinary Backstreets and bathed in the warmth of the Hurrem Sultan Hamami and it was those two experiences that made the argument for a return visit and three weeks later we found our way back to discover even more about this fascinating city.

Weaving your way through the tangled streets of shops, restaurants and coffee shops can be overwhelming but the area that borders Taksim Square establishes a welcomed comfort zone. The wide, colorful pedestrian walkways brim with locals and tourists alike, each seeking an evening of gawking at people and stores, dining at restaurants or simply out for a stroll.

Go Ahead, Make My Stay

Istanbul is divided into distinct areas and deciding on an area to stay can be a daunting task. The old city is home to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace but can be overwhelming with its throngs if tourists. The Asia side divided by the Bosphorus Strait is a little too remote for touristic endeavors but for first time visitors, the Taksim Square area is perfect for street exploration that remains well within soft adventure boundaries.

The InterContinental Istanbul is the ideal hotel accommodation for cruise guests and is utilized by premium cruise lines the likes of Silversea, Oceania and Regent for their pre and post cruise stays. Perched high atop a hill with commanding views of the city and the never ending boat traffic of the Bosphorus, it is secluded away in a park like setting yet only steps away from the vibrant sidewalks of the central Taksim area.

Elegance is on full display in the grandiose lobby area with an adjacent half inside, half outside garden lounge perfect for cocktails or afternoon tea. An opulent staircase encircles the reception area and leads up to the property’s restaurant that provides a bountiful breakfast of typical Turkish dishes and western favorites.

The classic ambiance of the Intercontinental brand is carried out by trained staff and perfected in the design of the spacious accommodations. As in sister properties, Club Level rooms come with a bevy of benefits, none more enjoyable than private access to the exclusive lounge serving cocktails, snacks and a full buffet breakfast.

The property offers a luxury spa to massage out the stress of long flights and even a Turkish hammam. For those that prefer a DIY approach to healthy well being, the property features an amazing gym facility. The outdoor pool is surrounded by trees and landscaping to embellish the feeling of ultra luxury.

Take dining to new heights with a sumptuous dinner in the rooftop Safran Restaurant as the stars twinkle above and the lights of the city glimmer below. After dinner the celebration of the good life continues with music by a DJ, drinks and dancing in the rooftop City Lights Bar. Hospitality is an essential requirement of any holiday and the InterContinental Istanbul delivers in every category.

Sweets In The Streets

Turkish cuisine, street food or the revered coffee can be found without effort but nothing is more endemic to these sidewalks than the shops hawking Turkish Delight and Turkish Baklava. The sweet addictive candy is broadly called lokum, loosely defined as throat comfort and if sugar is your guilty pleasure you’ll find dozens of outlets catering to your weakness.

RELATED: EAT, HEAT AND SLEEP IN ISTANBUL

The sweet jelly like cubes come in several flavors and are dusted with a light powered type sugar to prevent sticking together and the tubelike variety is loaded with pistachios or other crunchy condiments. Turkish baklava is baked in the thinnest of phyllo dough layers dripping in sugar cane syrup and stuffed with pistachios or walnuts. You’ll find several outlets of

Hafiz Mustafa, one of Istanbul’s most famous confectionaries and their iconic fez wearing assistants dispensing the delectable sweets in shops dotted throughout the city.

If you are compiling your destination bucket list, don’t let Istanbul slip over the edge. It’s in a category of its very own in a world removed from the ordinary.

BABCOCK STATE PARK

Clifftop, West Virginia

Let other tourists watch Maine’s Acadia National Forest turn from green to red and gold this autumn. The real fall connoisseur turns to the spectacular woods of West Virginia’s New River Gorge, dotted with waterfalls, a fully functional old-fashioned grist mill, and outlook points taking in miles of rolling, rainbow-hued hills.

KUBOTA GARDEN

Seattle, Washington

Japanese-American Fujitaro Kubota began working on a traditional East Asian garden among the woods of Seattle’s Rainer Beach neighborhood in 1927. Since then, the 20-acre landscape has become a haven for experiencing the tranquility of the outdoors. The garden is designed for easy strolling, and contains a curated collection of artistically manicured environments, equally appealing in the sunshine or in Seattle’s well-known fog and drizzle. The grounds are planted only with native species but carefully sculpted with bridges, streams, waterfalls, and rock outcroppings to amplify nature’s beauty, which is at its most breathtaking in autumn, when each tree tries to outdo its neighbor’s colorful display.

DURANGO-SILVERTON NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD

Durango, Colorado

The San Juan silver mines financed the train, but it’s gold that makes riders’ hearts soar every  autumn — along with vibrant pink, red, and yellow visible outside the vintage locomotive windows on a 3.5-hour fall foliage ride.
